AttractionsAlthough Playa la Arena is the newest of the three resort developments in the area, it is however, the home of the west coasts only tourist information offices. These offices are always a very useful contact point for information about local events and activities in the area, and the depth of knowledge of their staff never ceases to amaze me. Contact details are:Oficinas de Informacion Turistica C/ Manuel Ravelo, 20 L-35 Centro Comercial "Seguro el Sol" 38436 Playa la Arena Santiago del Teide Telephone: +34 922 860 348 Fax: +34 922 860 348
In addition to the above, for information about the municipal district of Santiago del Teide as a whole,
we have always found the offices at the local town hall are willing to assist whenever they are able.
Contact details are: Although not quite in the same league as the annual Santa Cruz carnival which is known to rival the spectacular event held in Rio de Janeiro each year, the residents of Los Gigantes are no less proud of their own 5 day celebration that is held during the week following Ash Wednesday. The theme of this year's parade through the town is The Circus, which is the centre piece of a full programme of live music events and shows that always culminates in a magnificent fireworks display. The harbour at Los Gigantes is also the departure point for numerous boat trips out to see the dolphin and whale colonies which live between the west coast of Tenerife and the neighbouring island of La Gomera. These trips offer superb value for money compared to those offered by the large tour operators, and you will be almost guaranteed a free child place along with the offer of a free trip next day if you don't see anything. The full details of the range of trips and services available at Los Gigantes Marina can also be found at their web site www.losgigantesmarina.com For the truly independent traveller who wishes to see more of Tenerife, and for whatever reason do not wish to hire a car, the public transport system around the island is surprisingly good. The local bus network operated by Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife do run a number of routes through the town, of which at least two would be of particular interest to visitors. These being the Linea 473 running from Los Gigantes to the resort of Las Galletas on the south east coast, passing through the resorts of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos enroute, and also their Linea 325 service which heads north towards Puerto de la Cruz.
